Having ranted on twitter I decided to blog about my annoyance that us 'young kids' or 'teenagers' are seen as unable to do anything by quite a few people. Now, I'll say this now to leave you in no doubt, I am NOT saying all you guys are like this, just some. Nor am I saying children should see everything and anything.
So how did my rant start? when #youngkidsshouldbebannedfrom trended on twitter. this really got to me because it seems to be 99% ignorant adults who assume we are good for nothing. The suggestions as to what should be banned ranged from twitter, to relationships to computers and phones. Now, I have 3 of those things, (lacking a relationship if you must know) and I appear to be a more than healthy child. Ask anyone who knows me.
I have grown up as a nerd who does what he wants but is sensible about that, again ask anyone who knows me.
That brings me on to another point, the people who seem to be the most patronising are those not working with children and teenagers. I have heard teachers say that when they say they work with teenagers people think it must be an awful job, and it is hard work to convince people we're actually not a knife wielding gin shooting drug taking bunch, in fact, the majority of us are polite and able citizens, who know our rights, as well as our responsibilities.
My teachers, my parents and other adults who know me or my friends understand that we are actually an intelligent bunch, I have taught my teachers stuff as well as them teaching me, which is the way it should be. Actually, look at the title of my blog. It is not 'where to buy guns' or 'where to get drugs' it's 'A Book Nerds (mostly) Book Based work.' Plain and simple.
And what about those who aren't good and intelligent? I believe you'll find 99% of them had bad parents who didn't support them. I was brought up loved and supported, not (un)loved and repressed. You'll find, I believe, it is much better to tell us what we can do, not what we can't. We thrive when we find our niche. Just like you do. Repression is not the answer, support is. Repression leads to ignorance, ignorance to discrimination.
Also, If all of these were made law our lives would be awful, if not impossible. We would most likely be forced to read censored fairy tales, go to bed at 7 and tuck our shirts in when wearing jeans and t-shirts. Or are they banned too?
This may seem a little cynical to you, but I have a point. Go to http://twitter.com/#!/search?q=%23youngkidsshouldbebannedfrom and you'll get my point. just about everything is banned at some point. And the list is getting longer! in the time it took to write this I have had another 20 tweets on this, most banning things.
Yet another point - if we're banned from speaking when not spoken to, or tweeting or blogging or writing anything against this, how can we argue back and how does that differ from dictatorships. Plans seem to be to censor everything, show us only bunnies and not allow us to speak out against the regime.
Or is that the point? We know more than you would like, so we can make legitimate arguments. Like this one. Should I be stopped for making a correct point?
Rant over (for now).
